Sufficient Latitude 1999
Originally at the MOCA in Lake Worth, here it is at New Langton Arts, S.F., CA in 2000. And from 21 Dec. 2018 - 10 March 2019 it will be part of the 6th Guangzhou Triennial. Link is to a review of the show that is most interesting in their assessment of what is happening in China, Now.

Here is a composite image of "Sufficient Latitude" from the GuangzhouTriennial

Made of Pine, hemlock, plastic sheeting, "rubber rope", canvas, maple, musicwire, generator and low voltage lights, It measured 10' (high) x 25' x 30'.

This installation simulates being adrift at night on a black plastic sea.  Rowing makes lights glow dimly on the horizon of the black plastic sea - as though you are coming home at night.  But rowing on the ocean is hard work.  Eventually you get tired and the lights flicker out.

Latitude is only half enough to know where you are and the easiest half at that.  Out of sight of land, on a starless night, you are basically lost.
